
Today is the 44th anniversary of the death of Ekushey Padak-winning dancer and dance director Gauhar Jamil.
Born at Sirajdikhan in Munshiganj in 1925, Gauhar Jamil made immense contribution to the dance arena.
Gaujar Jamil was drawn to dance from a young age. He received dance lessons such as ‘Bharatnatyam’, ‘Kathakali’ and ‘Kathak’ from various renowned teachers, including Uday Shankar, Sharbashree Maruthappa Pillai, Bal Keshta Menon, Ramnarayan Mitra and Bhaskar Dev.
He taught at the Bulbul Lalitakala Academy, Qamrunnessa School and others before founding the Jago Art Centre along with his wife Rawshan Jamil in Swamibagh in 1959.
Gauhar Jamil choreographed many dance dramas, including ‘Samanya Kshati’, ‘Anarkali’, ‘Bichar’, ‘Kanchan Mala’, ‘Itihaser Ekti Pata’, and ‘Chhiyattarer Manwantar’.
He also choreographed short dance productions such as ‘Jhumur’, ‘Krishan-Krishani’, ‘Jele’, ‘Sapure’ and ‘Nabanna’.
He received Ekushey Padak posthumously in 1981. Besides, the Bangladesh government issued a postage stamp of Gauhar Jamil in 2001.
Gauhar Jamil succumbed to a road accident on September 21, 1980.
