The 6th international conference of the Bangladesh Society of Critical Care Medicine was held at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Convention Hall of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka on Sunday.

BSMMU pro-vice-chancellor for research and development Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Hawlader attended the conference as chief guest, said a press release.

Mujibur Rahman said that critical care medicine could be needed by any person at any time. ‘If the BSCCM takes initiatives, the BSMMU administration will support the launch of this department at the university.’

Professor Dr ASM Arefin Ahsan, Professor Dr Mohammad Omar Faruk, Professor Dr FM Siddiqui, Dr Md Asaduzzaman, among others,  spoke at the conference.

Speakers also said that currently, higher courses in critical care medicine were being offered in 4 institutions, including the BSMMU, which was insufficient compared to the need.

The number of beds in critical care medicine is only 3,000 in the country, which is absolutely negligible compared to the demand, they mentioned.

The speakers also emphasised on creating state-of-the-art guidelines on ICU to ensure better medical services, launching various branches of critical care medicine rich in advanced technology in line with the world, and providing necessary advanced training to the concerned doctors and nurses.
