Bangladeshi tea producer Moulvi Tea Estate has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the London Tea Exchange to establish the world’s first model tea estate.
Nizamuddin Hasan Rashid, managing director of Moulvi Tea Estate, and Sheikh Aliur Rahman KGOR KC OBE, group chairman of London Tea Exchange, have signed the MoU recently in Moulvibazar, said a press release on Friday.
Under the partnership, Moulvi Tea Estate will drive local implementation and community development, while the London Tea Exchange will provide strategic guidance and access to global markets.
This initiative aims to implement the global fair pay charter, developed in collaboration with the Fair Pay Foundation and UNITAR.
The model tea estate will promote fair wages, ethical trade and environmentally responsible practices while supporting innovation, training and knowledge-sharing.
Through these efforts, the MTE seeks to uplift worker livelihoods, strengthen climate resilience and align Bangladesh’s tea sector with international sustainability standards.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of members of the Portuguese royal family, including Dom Duarte Pio de Bragança, head of the Portuguese Royal House (king); Isabel Ines de Castro C de Heredia de Bragança; and Afonso de Santa Maria de Bragança.
Nizamuddin Hasan Rashid said, ‘This partnership marks a milestone for Bangladesh’s tea industry, setting a global benchmark for fairness, innovation and sustainability.’
Sheikh Aliur Rahman stated, ‘The model tea estate will be an exemplary model of fair pay and responsible business can create lasting, meaningful transformation in global trade.’
Other distinguished attendees included Armando Jorge Lucas Calado GCSM, ambassador for Portugal for the UN Global Fair Pay Charter; Cristina Maria De Almeida Cabral Pinto, delegate of Royal Tour; Md Azizur Rahman, ambassador for Oxford for the UN Global Fair Pay Charter; Rohitha Grero, group managing director, London Tea Exchange; Sheikh Aslam, tea master, London Tea Exchange; Md Ashiqur Rahman Chowdhury, country director, London Tea Exchange Bangladesh; and Lutfur Abdur Rahman, member of delegation.
