A legal notice was served on Monday to the managing director of Aarong Centre and the store manager of its Moghbazar outlet, asking them to stop charging customers for shopping bags within 10 days鈥攐r face legal action.

Supreme Court lawyer Nishat Farjana Nipa sent the notice by registered post. She stated that as a regular customer, she bought nine items from Aarong鈥檚 Moghbazar outlet on September 24, spending Tk聽3,345. An additional Tk聽10 was charged for a paper shopping bag.


When she asked about the bag charge, the store manager told her that Aarong no longer provides free bags.

The manager explained that the bag fees from Tk聽10 to Tk聽25 were being collected as part of a fund for tree plantation under government-led green and sustainable development initiatives.

In her notice, the lawyer said that charging customers extra for Low quality paper shopping bags violates consumer rights.

She warned that a formal complaint would be filed with the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection if Aarong fails to stop the practice.
