Bangladeshi delegation and its United States counterpart reportedly agreed on most issues on the first day of the second-round discussion between two countries regarding newly imposed 35 per cent tariff on Wednesday.

In a social media post on early Thursday according to Bangladesh time, Golam Mortoza, press minister at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington said that the first day of discussions of Bangladesh-US on tariff-related issues has concluded, with both sides reaching broad consensus on most matters.

However, it was too early to comment on the tariff issue, he added, saying that the talks were scheduled to continue over the next two days.

He also said that commerce adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin led the negotiation session on behalf of Bangladesh, while national security adviser Khalilur Rahman and prime minister’s special assistant Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb joined the talks virtually from Dhaka.

Moreover, commerce secretary Mahbubur Rahman and additional secretary Nazneen Kauser Chowdhury also joined the meeting in person.

The first meeting of the second round of negotiations with US counterpart is underway as the United States Trade Representative invited Bangladesh to the second round of negotiations on the Agreement on Reciprocal Tariff in July 9-11.

The negotiations aimed at finalising a bilateral trade agreement between the countries to reduce the newly imposed 35 per cent tariff.
