The interim government of Bangladesh has taken an initiative to establish an employment department to expand job opportunities on the labour market, said labour and employment adviser M Shakhawat Hossain.

He also outlined reforms and developmental initiatives that the government has taken to develop the labour sector.

He discussed this during a meeting with Gilbert F Houngbo, director-general of the International Labour Organisation, on the sidelines of the ongoing 113th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, according to a ministry press release issued on Friday.

He also stated that the government was working to amend the Bangladesh Labour Act, simplify the trade union registration process for workers and strengthen labour inspection systems.

Moreover, the adviser highlighted government measures aimed at creating employment opportunities for young people, fostering new entrepreneurs and ensuring safe and just working environments across various industries, including shipbreaking and construction.

He urged the ILO to provide technical assistance for the protection of labour rights, ensuring safe working environments and the implementation of labour laws.

Labour secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman was also present at the meeting, according to the press release.
