The minimum wage board has drafted a proposal recommending Tk 16,250 as the minimum monthly wage for workers in the country’s poultry industry.

They also proposed a 5 per cent annual increment for the workers in the sector.

In this regard, the Ministry of Labour and Employment recently issued a gazette notification and invited suggestions or objections, if any, within 14 days of its publication.

In January last year, the ministry formed the minimum wage board for the poultry sector, the first time a board has been formed to set minimum wages.

The Minimum Wage Board recommended five grades for the workers.

According to the gazette notification, a worker at grade four would get Tk 16,250 as the minimum monthly wage, which includes a basic pay of Tk 9,500, a house rent allowance of Tk 4,750 (50 per cent of basic pay), a medical allowance of Tk 1,500, and a travel allowance of Tk 500.

Workers at grade three have been proposed to receive Tk 20,750 as minimum monthly wages, grade two workers would receive Tk 26,750, and grade one workers Tk 30,050.

The board has also recommended Tk 16,250 as the minimum monthly wage for grade-four employees.

Moreover, the board has proposed Tk 11,500 as the monthly pay for apprentice workers and employees during their six-month apprenticeship period.

According to the notification, Minimum Wage Board Chairman Mamunur Rashid, along with other officials, visited three poultry farms in Gazipur to collect data and information regarding minimum wages.

They also conducted several meetings in this regard.
