The election of the Bangladesh Charcoal Manufacturers and Exporters Association or BCCMEA’s board of directors will be held on March 8, according to a press release.

Charcoal Shilpo Rokkha O Sanskar Parishad, a panel participating in the election, has announced its manifesto, which include protecting the industry, significant reforms and the industry’s development for the 2025-2027 tenure.

‘The election will be held on March 8. The organisation has 43 voters. If we are elected by the voters, we will work to protect the industry and work for major reformations to develop it,’ the panel’s presidential candidate Atikur Rahman told journalists at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity auditorium in the capital Dhaka on Sunday.

In a written statement, Atikur said that the industry had been experiencing a difficult time due to various reasons, including setting up unplanned factories across the country, a shortage of raw materials, easy access to environmental clearance and high shipping charges.

‘The BCCMEA needs a talented governing body to resolve the industry’s problem. We also need government support to protect the industry. If we are elected, we will work to make it compliant and sustainable for the country’s economic development,’ he added.

Atikur Rahman informed that Tk 1,000 crore had been invested in the charcoal industry, where 25,000 people are directly engaged.

‘We exported items worth Tk 350 crore in the previous year. We want to build it as a strong industry in future. We have been doing business for more than one decade. If we are elected in the upcoming election, we will include the BCCMEA under the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries and set up a permanent office,’ he added.

BCCMEA convener Muhammed Nazmul Islam highlighted, ‘If we are elected, we will work for converting all factories into compliant factories within a short time, attempt to ensure easy access to low-interest loans, health insurance for workers and organise fairs in different countries to expand the market.’

DRU president Abu Saleh Akon, BCCMEA’s vice-president candidates Mehedi Hasan Julias and Habib–E–Hasan and other members Shahriar Ibne Ibrahim, Mofazzal Hossain Khokon, Mohammad Shamsul Alam Talukder, Alamgir Kabir, Shahadat Hossain Uzzal, Farhana Sharmin Kakon, Miraz Mohammad Tarekul Hasan, Hossain Ahmed Chowdhury, Shahim Ul Hoque and businessman Md Monirul Islam were also present in the programme.

Another panel named ‘Boisommo Birodhi Somonnito Parishad’ will contest the election.
