The 90th birthday of Al Mahmud, the poet of love, affection, nature and prayer, was observed on Friday.

Family members, admirers and well-wishers of Al Mahmud paid tributes to him placing floral wreaths on his grave at Dakshin Morail in Brahmanbaria in the morning.

He was born on July 11 in 1936 in the area.

Fans and followers of the poet celebrated the day in separate events. Marking the day, a discussion, remembrance and recitation programme were held at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka at 4:00pm.

Eminent figures of art and literature were present at the programme, organised by Kaler Kalas and Kaler Dhwani.

Bangla Academy sources said that a special seminar would be organised in July to mark the poet’s birth anniversary.

Poetry, memoirs and discussions will be organised at the MBA building of Dhaka University at 4:00pm Saturday.

Meanwhile, the poet’s fans have demanded that the poet’s birth anniversary be celebrated nationally.

They said that Al Mahmud was greatly despised and ignored during the past fascist period. Many of Al Mahmud’s poems greatly inspired the students and the public during the July Revolution.

He passed away in Dhaka on February 15, 2019.
