Publishing house Ujan in collaboration with the South Korean organisation LTI Korea held an event on Korean literature at the Sangskriti Bikash Kendra in Dhaka on Friday.
Poet-painter Shamset Tabrejee, poet-essayist and translator Kumar Chakraborty, poet and essayist Chanchal Ashraf, poet and essayist Gouranga Mohanto and writer and Jahangirnagar University professor Masood Imran Mannu were present as discussants at the event, which was presided over by veteran writer-translator Professor Khaliquzzaman Elias.
Moderated by cultural activist Dr Shahnaz Pervin, writer and journalist Soroishwarja Muhommod delivered welcome speech at the event.
Khaliquzzaman Elias has said that there is not even a writer in the world who has got the same reputation by writing in two languages. 鈥楾hose who could write in two languages also have to finally have to shelter on a language.鈥�
Khaliquzzaman Elias has added that after so many years of independence, there is no language policy of the country. 鈥業t is very important to have an integrated language for a state.鈥�
Professor Masood Imran Mannu has said that webtoon and animation in Korea are making different things we like. 鈥楾his is especially noticeable in their popular cultural products. Their heroes are not as muscular as Hollywood or Bollywood heroes.鈥�
Kumar Chakraborty has discussed the latest literature of South Korea, including the Nobel laureate Han Kang.
He said, 鈥楨conomic and military power is not just a big deal. The permanent influence of a country is created by the soft power or various cultural elements, including literature, music, films.鈥�
Chanchal Ashraf and Gouranga Mohanta highlighted the history of Korean literature.
Shamset Tabarejee highlighted the translations of Korean literature in Bangla at the event.
Soroishwarja Muhommod has mentioned that Ujan Publication has so far published eight books of Korean literature in Bangla, including stories, poems and novels, as well as books on Korea鈥檚 K-Pop.
This event begins with recitation of poetry. Bijan Guha and Ummme Habiba recited the poems of Korean poets while Halima Noor Papan reads from fiction.
The event also featured screening of a documentary.
