Rizia Rahman

Today is the 85th anniversary of birth of fiction writer Rizia Rahman.

Born at Bhabanipur in Kolkata on December 28, 1939, Rizia Rahman鈥檚 family moved to Bangladesh after the partition of the Indian subcontinent.


Rizia Rahman began writing stories at an early age. The debut literary work of the fiction writer, a collection of short stories, titled Agniswakshara, was published in 1967.

She made outstanding contribution to Bangla fiction through her works, which offers glimpses of lives of common people and historical events.

Rizia Rahman鈥檚 novels Rakter Akshar and Bang Theke Bangla helped her secure a permanent place in the history of Bangla fiction.

In Bang Theke Bangla, she portrayed the evolution of the nation with special focus on its culture and language, while Rakter Akshar revolves around people living in a brothel.

Rizia Rahman鈥檚 novels and short story collections include Uttar Purush, Alikhita Upakhyan, Surja Sabuj Rakta, Aranyer Kachhe, Nadi Nirabadhi, Dhabal Jyotsna , Ghar-Bhanga-Ghar, Ekal Chirakal, Jharer Mukhomukhi, Ekti Phuler Janya, Shudhu Tomader Janya, He Manab Manabi, Harun Phereni, Caged in Paradise and Other Stories and Dure Kothao.

She received awards, including Ekushey Padak, Bangla Academy Literary Award, Jashore Sahitya Parishad Puraskar, and Bangladesh Lekhika Sangha Swarna Padak.

Rizia Rahman passed away on August 16, 2019.
