The British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke on Monday reiterated the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting free, fair, credible and peaceful national elections in Bangladesh, scheduled for February next year.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with chief election commissioner AMM Nasiruddin, the envoy said the UK welcomed the announcement made earlier by the chief adviser regarding the polls.
‘We had a very good discussion, and I reaffirmed the UK’s support for free, fair, credible and peaceful elections here in Bangladesh,’ the high commissioner said.
The envoy said that the ongoing efforts of both the Election Commission and the interim government were significant, adding that the UK, in cooperation with international partners, was extending support through national civic education programmes — particularly aimed at vulnerable groups — as well as the training of polling staff.
‘The agenda this morning was to discuss the UK’s support to the EC lection. Civic education and polling staff training were the key issues,’ she said.
