Bangladesh will buy two bulk carrier ships from a United States company at Tk 935.71 crore.
The advisory council committee on government purchase at a meeting on Tuesday approved the buying of the two bulk carrier ships.
The decision of purchasing the vessels from the US came after the interim government on July 23 decided to import 2.2 lakh tonnes wheat from the country.
Pressure from Washington to reduce trade gap between the two trading partners prompted Dhaka to buy more from the US amid reciprocal tariff threats, trade experts said.
Following three rounds of talks, the Trump administration has imposed on Bangladeshi goods 20 per cent reciprocal tariff, lowering it from the previously announced 35 per cent, on top of sectoral tariffs.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the advisory council committee on government purchase also approved two separate proposals to import two cargos of liquefied natural gas from the international spot market.
Presided over by finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed at the secretariat in the capital Dhaka, the meeting approved the proposal from the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation to buy the two vessels from the US company, Hellenic Dry Bulk Ventures.
The US company won the supply deal by participating in an international open tender floated by the state-owned BSC to implement its project — the procurement of two bulk carriers with a capacity of 55,000 to 66,000 deadweight tonnage each.
One of the two LNG cargoes will be supplied by M/S Petro China International at Tk 484.38 crore while the other one by Aramco Trading Singapore at Tk 502.94 crore.
With the approval, formalities for importing 41 cargoes of LNG in the current calendar year have been completed.
The advisory council committee also approved the purchasing of 4.4 crore copies of different books at Tk 200.91 crore for the classes I, II and III under the education year of 2026.   Â
