The Embassy of the Netherlands in Dhaka, in collaboration with the Centre for Governance Studies, a non-government think tank, hosted a discussion with members of major political parties to highlight the challenges women face in politics and diplomacy marking the International Day of Women in Diplomacy on Tuesday in the city.

The roundtable focused on the role of women in political diplomacy in Bangladesh, addressing systemic challenges and opportunities for reform in political party structures to enhance women鈥檚 inclusion, said a CGS press release on Wednesday.

The event, attended by diplomats and representatives from Western likeminded missions, featured speakers, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairman鈥檚 adviser Mahdi Amin, BNP international affairs assistant secretary Fahima Nasrin Munni, Amar Bangladesh Party joint general secretary Nasreen Sultana Mili, National Citizen Party senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara, NCP leader Syeda Nilima Dola, Subikunnahar Munni from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami women鈥檚 division, and Bangladesh Jatiya Party-BJP chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho.

The discussion was facilitated by Dhaka University鈥檚 international relations department former chairperson Amena Mohsin.

Personal stories of resilience and cross-party solidarity were shared, underscoring the significance of mutual support among women leaders in fostering democratic values and inclusive governance, said the press release.

The International Day of Women in Diplomacy, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2022, is observed annually on June 24 to recognise and promote the vital role women play in diplomacy and international relations.
