The Border Guard Bangladesh on Saturday afternoon brought six Bangladeshi fishermen back from Myanmar’s Arakan Army’s custody.
The army handed over the six fishermen in the afternoon through the Ghumdhum border along Myanmar at Bangladesh-Myanmar Friendship Bridge under Naikhyangchari upazila in Bandarban, said a BGB press release issued in the evening.
The released fishermen are Md Sohel, 18, Md Ismail, 40, Md Jashim, 19, Md Hossain Ali, 14, Md Shafiq, 33 and Md Shahin, 12.
Of the six fishermen, five fishermen were detained by the Arakan Army as they mistakenly entered 700 yards inside Myanmar territory with two boats on March 1 while catching fish in the River Naf, said the BGB release.
Another Bangladeshi fisherman was detained by the Arakan Army on March 25.
BGB 34 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Faruk Hossain Khan said that the battalion contacted the Arakan Army and they handed over fishermen in the afternoon after long negotiation.
‘We have handed over those fishermen to their families,’ he added.
On March 15, the Arakan Army also handed over the 26 Bangladeshi fishermen following an initiative by the BGB for a long time.
