Members of India’s Khasi ethnic community shot dead two Bangladeshi youths and injured another at Companiganj border in Sylhet on Sunday evening.

The deceased were identified as Kawsar Ahmed, 32, son of late Sundar Ali of Kalairag Karbalatuk village under Uttar Ranikhai union at Companiganj upazila in the district, and Ali Hossain, 30, son of late Fazar Ali of the same village, the Border Guard Bangladesh said.


Victims’ bodies were handed over on Monday  evening, the local police confirmed.

Uttar Ranikhai union parishad chairman Fayzur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that several villagers, including Kawsar and Ali, entered the Indian territory crossing the border along International Pillar No-1253 near Kalairag outpost of the BGB at the upazila on Sunday evening to bring Indian goods.

‘The victims’ companion Nabi Hossain, son of Billal Hossain of the same village, also sustained injuries, and returned home at night with information that Kawsar and Ali were shot dead by the Indian Khasis,’ he said.

The union chairman said that they informed the Companiganj police immediately after they received the news. 

Contacted, the BGB 48 commanding officer confirmed ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· of the killing of two Bangladeshi youths.

‘We came to know through our local outpost on Sunday night that two bodies lay just 20–30 feet inside the Indian territory from the line of border,’ he said.

The BGB officer told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they became confirmed about the identity of the victims on Monday noon after their relatives filed a general diary with the Companiganj police.

‘We contacted the respective officials of the Border Security Force of India as well as the Indian police. They agreed to hand over the bodies to our police after maintaining the legal formalities,’ he said on Monday evening.

He added that the Companiganj police were dealing with the matter directly with their Indian counterparts.

Companiganj police officer-in-charge Golam Dastagir Ahmed told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· at about 8:00pm Monday that the Indian authorities concerned handed over the bodies of Kawsar and Ali to the Bangladesh police at around 7:00pm after concluding a flag meeting.

‘Necessary legal procedures are going on before handing over the victims’ bodies to their relatives,’ he said.
