At least five bilateral instruments including an agreement on exemption of visas for official passport holders have been readied for signing during Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s six-day visit to Thailand beginning on Wednesday.

She would be visiting Thailand at the invitation of Thai prime minister Srettha Thavisin.

‘Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Thai prime minister Srettha Thavisin on April 26 and deliver a special speech at the 80th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific on April 25 during her visit to Thailand’s Bangkok from April 24 to April 29,’ foreign minister Hasan Mahmud told a curtain raiser press conference at his Segunbagicha office on Monday.

He said Dhaka would also seek cooperation of Bangkok for the Rohingya repatriation to their homeland as Thailand is a member of ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and also hosting the forcibly displaced people from Myanmar.

Hasan said five bilateral instruments including an agreement, three memorandums of understanding and one ‘letter of intent’ were likely to be signed during the PM’s Thailand visit.

The minister said that this would be first bilateral visit for prime minister Sheikh Hasina after she took over for the fourth consecutive term through the January 7 general elections.

The documents included ‘Agreement on Visa Exemption for Official Passport Holders and MoUs on Energy Cooperation, Tourism Cooperation and Customs Cooperation and a letter of intent for starting negotiations on the proposed ‘Free Trade Agreement’.

‘The Letter of Intent signified the willingness of the two countries to begin talks for negotiations on the potential free trade agreement between the two countries,’ the minister responded to a question, adding that Bangladesh expected investments from Thailand and increased trade between the two countries.

He said that the visit would create an opportunity for holding talks on crucial issues like investments, energy cooperation, tourism and connectivity.

The prime minister’s delegation would include ministers, advisers and senior government officials, the minister mentioned.

The theme for 80th session of UNESCAP is ‘Leveraging digital innovation for sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific’.
