Bangladesh were just one point away from retaining the title after defeating Sri Lanka 5-0 in their fifth match of the SAFF Under-20 Women鈥檚 Championship at the Kings Arena Training Ground in the city on Saturday.

The hosts, who won their fifth consecutive match of the championship, will need just a draw against Nepal in their final match on Monday.


After the day鈥檚 match, Bangladesh maintained the top place of the table with 15 points from five games, while Nepal, who beat Bhutan 8-0 in the day鈥檚 first match, remained in second place with 12 points from the same number of outings.

Peter Butler鈥檚 charges have been in ruthless form throughout the competition as they defeated Sri Lanka 9-1, Nepal 3-2 and Bhutan 4-1 and 3-0 in their previous matches.聽

On the other hand, Nepal, who suffered their only defeat against Bangladesh, beat Bhutan 6-1, 8-0 and Sri Lanka by identical 7-0 margins in their other two games.

In the day鈥檚 match, forward Puja Das scored a brace, while forward Trishna Rani, midfielder Kanon Rani Bahadur and captain Afeida Khandaker scored once each for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh went to break with a 2-0 lead before scoring three more goals in the second half.

Kanon opened the account for Bangladesh in the 25th minute when her left-footed drive from the edge of the box entered the net following a back pass by midfielder Oeyshi Khatun.

The hosts doubled the lead in the third minute of the stoppage of the first half. Trishna鈥檚 shot hit the post after a slight deflection from Tharushika, but Puja finished it calmly on the rebound.

Puja completed her brace in the 73rd minute as her right-footed drive from 30-yard distance got to the back of the net after a pass by midfielder Sapna Rani.

Trishna joined the party by scoring her team鈥檚 fourth goal of the night in the 86th minute. Captain Afeida Khandaker completed the rout from the spot kick in the seventh minute of the injury time.
