
Rangpur Division boys’ team and the Rajshahi Division girls’ team emerged champions of the National Gold Cup Football (Under-17) Tournament at the National Stadium in Dhaka on Thursday.
Rangpur beat Mymensingh Division boys’ team by 4-3 goals on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the stipulated time, while Rajshahi beat Mymensingh girls’ team by 3-0 goals in the final.Â
Rangpur advanced into the final after beating Khulna by 4-2 goals on penalties after the stipulated time ended 1-1 in the semi-final.Â
Mymensingh boys booked their place in the final by beating Sylhet boys by 5-4 goals also on penalties after the regulation time ended 2-2 in the other semi-final.Â
In the girls’ first semi-final, Mymensingh beat Rangpur by 4-3 goals on penalties after the stipulated time ended goalless, while Rajshahi defeated Sylhet by 1-0 to confirm their place in the final.Â
A total of 110,264 footballers across the country took part in the tournament, which started with its upazila-level matches in June 2024, aiming to scout talented footballers from the grassroots level.Â
Some 40 boys and 40 girls will be selected from this tournament for long-term training at home and abroad under the sports ministry.Â
Ministry of youth and sports advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain distributed prizes among the finalists as the chief guest in the closing ceremony.
