The Bangladesh Football Federation has finally extended the contracts of the national men’s team coach, Javier Cabrera, and the national women’s team coach, Peter James Butler, according to a federation press release on Thursday.

Though the previous stint of both the coaches ended on December 31, 2024, the BFF took time to renew their contracts for various reasons, as Cabrera sought a pay hike, whereas Butler’s extension was in jeopardy after the Englishman had arguments with his charges during the 2024 SAFF Women’s Championship in Nepal.

Both of their fresh contracts would be effective from January 15, 2025. The BFF took the decision in an online meeting with BFF president Tabith Awal, who is now in London, a day before making it public on Thursday.

The third stint will keep the Spanish coach Cabrera, who led his charges only to two wins out of the eight Bangladesh played in 2024, until April 30, 2026.

The 40-year-old Cabrera was handed the Bangladesh job first in January 2022 on a one-year contract to replace Englishman Jamie Day before the contract was extended in January 2023 for one more year.

The second stint of Butler, who guided the women’s team to back-to-back SAFF Women’s Championship titles in October 2024, will end on December 31, 2026.

The 58-year-old Butler was given the charges of the national women’s team in May 2024, about four months after he was appointed as the BFF Elite Football Academy coach in January 2024.
