Today is the 77th anniversary of the birth of renowned actress Sarah Begum Kabori, who was popular among the people as ‘pretty girl’ of the film industry.
Born on July 19, 1948, Kabori ascended to fame during the ‘60s. She made her foray into the film industry with Soovash Dutta-directed film ‘Sutarang’ in 1964.
The actress acted in about 200 films, including ‘Nil Akasher Niche’, ‘Deep Nebhe Nai’, ‘Titash Ekti Nadir Naam’, ‘Sareng Bou’, ‘Devdas’ and ‘Ka Kha Ga Gha Umo’.
The popularity of Kabori reached such a height that a road next to which she and the other crew members stayed during the shooting of ‘Ka Kha Ga Gha Uma’ in Chuadanga in 1969 became popularly known as Kabori Road, which became official in 2017.
She also used her popularity to boost the freedom fighters and Bangladeshi refugees in India during the War of Independence.
Kabori made her directorial debut with the film ‘Ayna’ in 2006. She also penned a book titled Smritituku Thak.
She received National Film Award in best actress category for her role in the film ‘Sareng Bou’ and in lifetime achievement category in 2013.
Sarah Begum Kabori passed away on April 17, 2021.
