Ferry services on the Aricha-Kazirhat route in the Jamuna River and the Paturia-Daulatdia route in the Padma River were suspended for around 10 hours and seven hours on Thursday due to dense fog.

The movement of other vessels, including engine-run boats and launches, on the routes, also halted due to the dense fog, leaving passengers, as well as vessel and transport workers, suffer in the chilly weather.

According to Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation officials, ferry service on the Aricha-Kazirhat route was halted at 11:50pm on Wednesday night while on the Paturia-Daulatdia route at 3:00am on Thursday.

Deputy general manager of the corporation, Nasir Mahmud Chowdhury, said that the ferry services on the both routes resumed at around 10:00am.

Dense fog has been forming over the Padma and Jamuna basins in the evenings for the past three days, intensifying overnight and severely reducing visibility.

This has made ferry navigation highly risky prompting authorities to suspend services to avoid potential accidents.
