Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Sunday issued signal number three for the country鈥檚 four maritime ports as the low pressure over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression with chances of it strengthening even more today.

The weather system is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Bangladesh from Wednesday, the BMD said, asking people to be ready for widespread rainfall in parts of Bangladesh.


The depression was 370 kilometres south of West Bengal at 4:30pm on Sunday, said India Meteorological Department.

The IMD warned that the depression was likely to intensify into a deep depression by today to cross between Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Digha by noon today.

Extreme rainfall has been predicted in Odisha under the influence of the system which the IMD said would also trigger very heavy to heavy rainfall in Ganges areas of West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura between September 9 and 12.

The BMD asked fishing boats and trawlers in the Bay to stay close to the shore until further notice. Maxi- mum sustained wind speed within 44 kilometres of the system was 40 kilometres per hour.

The heatwave that started in parts of Bangladesh on Saturday retreated on Sunday, remained confined to the districts of Rajshahi, Kurigram and Tangail.

The highest day temperature of 36.2C was recorded in Rajshahi on Sunday.

The BMD said that the day temperature was likely to drop by 2C by tomorrow.

In the 24 hours until 6:00pm on Sunday, Bangladesh鈥檚 maximum rainfall of 102mm was recorded in Nikli of Kishoreganj.

Power cuts became more frequent amidst the ongoing heatwave with 1,796MW of load shedding recorded at the peak load shedding hour at 4:00pm during the daytime on Sunday.

The power demand at the peak load shedding hour was 14,350MW. A total of 12,469MW of power was generated at the peak load shedding hour on Sunday, according to the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh.
