One more life was claimed by a landslide in Cox鈥檚 Bazar on Monday as very heavy rain continued along Bangladesh鈥檚 coast for the third consecutive day.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Monday morning issued a heavy rainfall warning, effective for 48 hours, that landslide might continue to occur in southeastern Chattogram division.


Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre on Monday warned that major rivers in Feni, Bandarban, Cox鈥檚 Bazar and Chattogram might rapidly swell overflowing their danger marks.

With the latest landslide death, four people were so far killed in the disaster triggered by continued heavy rainfall.

News Age correspondent in Cox鈥檚 Bazar reported that Abdus Sukkur, 60, a resident of Maheshkhali, was buried alive and her daughter Mostafa Khanam, 20, was injured after the hill near their house collapsed on their house.

On August 18, three members of a family were killed in a landslide in Pekua upazila of Cox鈥檚 Bazar.

Cox鈥檚 Bazar received 401mm of rainfall between 6:00am on August 15 and 6:00pm on August 19, said the BMD.

The BMD in a special bulletin issued at 10:00am on Monday said that due to active monsoon, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions in next 48 hours.

The potential rainfall might lead to landslides in Chattogram division.

The FFWC in a bulletin said that Feni, Muhuri, Halda, Sangu and Matamuhuri might rapidly swell over the next 48 hours and overflow their banks due to heavy rainfall.

In the 24 hours until 9:00am on Monday, the FFWC said, Sangu swelled by 111cm.

In the 24 hours until 6:00pm on Monday, Bangladesh鈥檚 highest rainfall of 175mm was recorded in Cumilla.

India Meteorological Department predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in areas in the upstream that could immediately affect Bangladesh by sending massive volumes of runoff through August 23.

The BMD asked all four maritime ports to hoist signal number 3 and fishing trawlers and boats to stay close to the shore until further notice.
