An individual named Ujjal Roy filed an application with the Election Commission on Tuesday to register a new political party named ‘Awami League.’

In the application he sought either a boat or hilsa fish as the symbol of the party while the address of the party was mentioned as ‘Bangabandhu Avenue.’

Bangladesh Awami League, ousted from power on August 5 last year through a student-led mass uprising ending a 16-year-long autocratic rule, is one of the oldest political parties of Bangladesh.

The address of the head office of Bangladesh Awami League is also Bangabandhu Avenue and its electoral symbol is boat.

Ujjal Roy, a resident of Parbatipur in Dinajpur, signed the application as the party’s president.

Ujjal Roy confirmed ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he had submitted the application to the EC for the registration of a party named Awami League, expressing interest in contesting the national elections from the Dinajpur-5 constituency.

He said that he was the only member of the party and currently had no other supporters.

When asked, EC additional secretary KM Ali Newaz told reporters that the EC would grant registration for political parties only if all necessary conditions were met as per the laws and rules.

If the requirements were not fulfilled, the application would not be accepted, he further said.
