
Politicians at a discussion in the capital Dhaka on Saturday called on the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus to declare a road map for the next general election without delay.
They called on the interim government to take steps for holding the next general election in a free, fair and credible manner so that voters could cast their votes.
Serajul Alam Khan Centre and Research Institute organised the discussion in the National Press Club titled ‘Proposed state and constitution reform proposal’ where chairman of the centre, Raihanul Islam chaired.
Nagarik Oikya president and also a leader of Ganatantra Mancha Mahmudur Rahman Manna, called on the interim government to take steps immediately to hold the next general election early in a free, fair and credible manner.
Adviser to the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia Abdus Salam said that the interim government had failed to control price hikes of essential commodities.
Moreover, it had imposed value added tax on more than 100 commodities, he said.
He called on the interim government to hold the next general election early for democratic transition of the country.
The reforms of the state and constitution would be done completely by the elected government after the election, Abdus Salam said.
Abdus Salam also said that under the patronisation of the interim government formation of ‘king’s party’ would not be accepted by the people.
Senior vice-president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD Tania Rob said that they must not neglect the spirit of the War of Independence of 1971.
‘We must not patronise the anti-liberation political forces in the country,’ Tania Rob said.
General secretary of Socialist Party of Bangladesh Bazlur Rashid Firoz, general secretary of Bangladesh Jasod Nazmul Haque Prodhan, convener of Bhashani Onusari Parishad Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, general secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad Rashed Khan, former member of the parliament Tasnim Rana, JSD central leader Moshref Hossain Montu and others spoke at the discussion.
