Vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Open University Professor ABM Obaidul Islam at a workshop on its campus in Gazipur on Saturday said that education would be more relevant and timely through simplification of educational services and improvement of quality.

A workshop titled Simplification of Educational Services and Improvement of Quality was held at the Lecture Gallery of the Central Conference and Training Centre of the university with officials of the Dhaka regional centre and its sub-regional centres and programme-based coordinators of various study centres, said a press release.

The workshop organised by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell was inaugurated by chief guest and keynote speaker of the event, Professor ABM Obaidul Islam.

He said, ‘Simplification of educational services is very important to develop student-friendly educational programmes and education will be more relevant and timely through quality improvement.’

‘Although the Open University is currently facing various problems, we are working towards solutions. The decline in the number of students is a big threat to the university, because our financial survival is mainly dependent on the programme. Therefore, coordinators, tutors and everyone must take an active role in promoting the admission process,’ he mentioned.

He also said, ‘Most of the students are disadvantaged and it is inhumane to charge extra money or delay services from them.’

He also mentioned that they were working to improve the quality of services by hiring IT experts, launching helplines and strengthening one-stop services. ‘However, this university will move forward not only with the sincere cooperation of the administration, but also with everyone’s cooperation.’

Treasurer of the university, Professor Abul Hasnat MD Shamim, said that students expected quality services and a conducive environment. ‘For this, it is necessary to make the one-stop service more effective, increase the use of information technology and limit the service time to 24 hours.’

Professor Md Anisur Rahman, registrar, acting, delivered the welcome speech and expressed his gratitude at the workshop.
