
The teachers of the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology on Monday continued to boycott classes and all other academic activities for the second consecutive day in protest at assaults on them.
On the day, they also announced that they would not return to classes until the students involved in the assault of the teachers were punished.
Earlier on Sunday also, they refused to conduct classes after the university reopened around two and half a month later.
The KUET Teachers Association held an emergency meeting on the campus on Monday to demand punishment of all involved in assaulting teachers, urging the university authorities to reinstate academic environment within seven working days.Â
Association president Professor Md Shahidul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they did not join classes, protesting at their physical assault and cyber bullying by students.
He alleged that after February 18 on different occasions students assaulted the teachers mostly out of sheer misunderstanding.
All academic activities at the university were suspended between February 25 and May 3 following a violent clash between Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and the Students Against Discrimination on February 18 over banning on-campus student politics.
The classes were scheduled to resume on Sunday.
The KUET students started staging demonstrations, including fast-unto-death protest, on the campus from April 15, demanding the removal of the then vice-chancellor over allegations of failing to ensure student safety, encouraging legal action against protesters, and protesting at temporary expulsion of 37 students.
The education ministry removed KUET vice-chancellor Professor Mohammad Mashud and pro-vice-chancellor Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam from their posts on April 25.
On May 1, the government appointed Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology professor Md Hazrat Ali as the KUET’s acting vice-chancellor.
