The adviser to the interim government for the primary and mass education ministry Bidhan Ranjan Roy Podder on Saturday expressed concern over the quality of primary education.
‘The development of the physical infrastructure for primary education is quite visible,’ he said, adding, ‘but compared with that the quality of primary education is not improving which we are quite concerned about.’
Enhancing the teaching quality is where the solution lay and to improve it was the responsibility of the teachers, he said.
The remarks came from the adviser when he was speaking at an opinion sharing meeting attended by different stakeholders of Mymensingh district at the Advocate Tarek Memorial Auditorium in Mymensingh town, said a press release issued by the ministry on the day.
The Mymensingh district primary education office organised the meeting.
Bidhan Ranjan said that although the government was giving free primary education and textbooks and stipends but the guardians were sending their children to kindergartens and madrassahs by spending money.
He also mentioned that the infrastructural facilities for education were good, the teachers were skilled, salary structure was fairly good and the jobs were secured.
‘In other educational institutions these facilities are comparatively low,’ he said, adding, ‘then why will the guardians send their children to other schools? Where is the problem in improving the quality of primary education?
He called on the stakeholders to share their opinions to improve the quality of education.
The adviser further said that quality education was necessary as it is a prerequisite for eradicating social discrimination.
The teachers should help the students to learn through critical thinking and meaning learning setting aside the rote learning process, he said.
Besides teachers, teaching quality improvement would also need active involvement of all others concerned, the adviser also observed.
The programme was chaired by Mymensingh divisional commissioner Md Mokhtar Ahmed and attended, among others, by Directorate of Primary Education director general Abu Nur Mohammad Shamsuzzaman and director for policy and operation Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, National Academy for Educational Management director general Farid Ahmed, Mymensingh deputy commissioner Mofidul Alam, Mymensingh district primary education officer Md Obaidullah and upazila and assistant upazila primary education officers, instructors, head teachers and assistant teachers from different schools.
