The University Grants Commission on Tuesday said that the East Asian University was conducting its activities completely illegally without taking any approval from the government. Â
The university has no campus in the capital and presents false information on its website (https://eaub.info/ ), a UGC inspection team found out recently.Â
The inspection team said in its report that the unapproved East Asian University was conducting its illegal activities only for ‘certificate businesses’.Â
A press release, issued by the commission on Tuesday, read that UGC took an initiative to collect information about the university after a renowned private industrial institution’s human resource branch requested the commission to check the authenticity of a certificate issued by the university.
After not getting the name of the university on the list of the approved private universities by the UGC, the commission tried to collect information on the university from its website.Â
The location of the university is in the East Merul Badda area in the capital as per the website.
The two-member UGC team in its report, submitted on January 20, said that there was no existence of the East Asian University in the area.
As per the university’s website (https://eaub.info/), it has approval from the government of Bangladesh, the UGC, the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Bar Council.
In reality, this university has no approval from any of the aforementioned institutions, the report continued. Â
It also said that if the name of the university was typed via Google search engine the name of the Asian University of Bangladesh was displayed on the scrollbar but the page opened in the name of East Asian University.
Additionally, if clicked on the name of East Asian University then the page of the IBAIS University (https://ibais.ac/) opened up.
The team made some recommendations including sending letter to the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited to shut the university’s website domain immediately, requesting the education ministry to urge the home ministry and Anti-Corruption Commission to take legal action against the people involved with the operation of the university and publish advertisement on national dailes to warn all stakeholders.Â
Currently, a total of 115 private universities have got approval from the UGC while the number is 55 for public universities.
