
The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh chairman Professor SMA Faiz on Thursday at a meeting proposed to amend the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation scheme to provide uninterrupted high-speed broadband connectivity in university halls and ensure funding for providing scholarships to underprivileged meritorious students.
Apart from this, it is necessary to revise the HIT scheme and formulate an up-to-date policy by prioritising the needs of the students, he highlighted these issues in a courtesy meeting with a delegation of six members of the World Bank at the UGC.
Dhaka University has been considered as a pilot project as part of this proposal, said a press release.
The UGC members Professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, Professor Mohammad Anwar Hossen, its secretary Md Fakhrul Islam, planning and development director Mohammad Maksudur Rahman Bhuiyan, HIT project director Professor Asaduzzaman, World Bank lead economist and programme leader Syed Amir Ahmed, senior education specialist TM Asaduzzaman, among others, were present at the meeting.
Syed Amir Ahmed said that this flagship project would play an important role in meeting the challenges of demographic dividend, human resource development and upgradation of higher education. ‘Initiatives will be taken to revise the HIT scheme by taking into consideration the UGC’s proposal regarding internet and scholarships.’
