The students of Dhaka University-affiliated seven colleges on Wednesday suspended their on-going movement for a separate university.

At a press conference at Dhaka College auditorium, they said that student representatives of the seven colleges were satisfied with the education adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud’s response to work for establishing a ‘distinct identity’ for the students of seven affiliated colleges.

Dhaka College student Naim Hawladar read a written statement at the press conference, saying that the education adviser acknowledged students’ demand and provided assurance for establishing a distinct identity for them in a meeting on Tuesday.

‘He assured us that he would cancel the DU affiliation for the seven colleges in accordance with the students’ demands… A new distinct identity will be established for the students of the seven colleges,’ said Naim.

‘The process for creating this identity will be determined by a committee formed by the ministry and a team of experts. The adviser has asked for some time for this,’ mentioned Naim, adding that student representatives would be included in the committee.

Deciding to suspend the on-going movement and programmes, he stated, ‘Until further notice, there will be no on-ground programmes regarding the demand.’

Students, however, will return to the streets if they do not get any effective solution despite the assurance, Naim mentioned.

Student representatives of the seven-affiliated colleges – Dhaka College,  Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, Eden Mohila College, Government Bangla College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Government Titumir College, and Kabi Nazrul Government College – were present at the press conference.

Earlier, students of the seven colleges blocked road crossings, boycotted all academic activities, including classes and examinations, staged demonstrations to press their demands.

They demanded a separate autonomous university to govern these seven colleges and formation of a commission to facilitate the transformation once the university was founded.

They blocked the Science Laboratory crossing on October 21, 29 and 30, and boycotted all academic activities on November 3 and 4.

About 1.67 lakh students are studying in the colleges, which came under Dhaka University in 2017 and before that these were under the National University.
