
The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) on Monday asked all commercial banks to submit detailed banking information of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC chairman Obayed Ullah Al Masud and his family members following multiple allegations against him.
Masud was appointed chairman by the central bank in August 2024. The BFIU move comes after reports various allegations emerged, as intelligence unit aim to detect any unusual transactions.
The BFIU sent separate letters to banks, seeking account details of Masud’s wife Marjina Begum, his sons, Junnun Safoan and Junayed Julker Nayen Tian, and his daughter Tasmia Tarannum Naomi.
Banks have also been instructed to report any accounts operated under different names on behalf of these individuals.
Additionally, by July 15, banks must provide information on any savings certificates, bonds, lockers, student files, credit cards, prepaid or gift cards, and transaction vouchers involving Tk 5 lakh or more held by them.
Masud earlier served as managing director of state-owned Sonali and Rupali banks during the Awami League-led government.
Since August 2024, Bangladesh Bank has restructured the boards of 14 banks, including Islami Bank.
