Bangladesh national team’s new batting coach Mohammad Ashraful urged everyone to criticise patiently as he was embarking upon a new challenge in the upcoming series against Ireland.Ìý

The former national team captain was appointed as the batting coach after the batting came under a lot of scrutiny during the recent days.Ìý

The senior assistant coach, Mohammad Salahuddin, who has been working as a batting coach also, has recently submitted his resignation also.Ìý

When Ashraful, who was talking to the reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday, was reminded about the backlash Salahuddin faced in the social media, he was quite sympathetic to Salahuddin.Ìý

‘Yes, you should criticise, but I hope if you do it a bit patiently, that would be good. I think because everyone wants to give their best,’ said Ashraful.Ìý

However, Ashraful thinks it's normal for people to get criticised, especially if someone works in a sector that is result-orientated.

He said, ‘So in that sense, I know the criticism will happen—that’s normal, that’s life. If you do well, people will lift you up to the sky; if you do badly, they’ll bring you down. So instead of worrying about that, I’ll just try to do my job.’

Ashraful also said that, as a coach, he would feel less pressure than a player.Ìý

‘There will be more pressure if you are in a dressing room as a player. Because the 18 crore people judge your performance,’ he said.Ìý

‘But a coach is only judged when a team cannot perform. Then everyone says that this coach is no good. But as a coach, you don’t have much to do during the match,’ he added.Ìý

The youngest Test centurion in cricket history also reminded everyone that it’s the players who need to perform ultimately.Ìý

‘You can tell your players what the situation is demanding, how the wicket is behaving, and how a particular bowler bowls, but the ultimate work will be done by them,’ he said.Ìý

‘So I think there’s less pressure on a coach. But to be able to get the performance out of a player is the biggest job a coach could do. I will try to do that thing so that they can give their best,’ he added.Ìý

He also wants them to perform consistently.Ìý

‘I hope that each and every batter of our team will score big in every two innings because they are talented and exciting. They are performers as well,’ he said.Ìý

‘They might perform, but not on a consistent basis. I want to help them to be consistent, which I couldn’t do in my [playing] life,’ he added.Ìý

The national team will travel to Sylhet today, where the first Test against Ireland begins on November 11 at the Sylhet International Stadium.

The second and final Test will begin on November 19 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur before the two teams travel to Chattogram for a three-match T20I series.Ìý
