The long-awaited election of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh is set to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday.
However, cricketers will only vote to elect the president of the association, which is affiliated with The World Cricketers' Association (formerly FICA), as the members of the other posts have already been elected unopposed.Â
Former cricketer Selim Shahed and national team player Mohammad Mithun will contest for the presidential post.
Former national opener Shahriar Hossain Bidyut and current wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan have been elected as the senior vice-president and vice-president, respectively, while the eight other cricketers Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shamsur Rahman Shuvo, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rumana Ahmed, Khaled Mashud Pilot, Imrul Kayes, Irfan Sukkur, and Akbar Ali would emerge as the executive committee members.Â
A total of 215 former and current cricketers are on the final voters list, confirmed former national wicketkeeper and CWAB election commissioner Nasir Ahmed Nasu on Wednesday.Â
The election will be followed by the annual general meeting starting at 1:30pm at the Academy premise of the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.Â
The polls will run between 3:00pm and 5:00pm, as the cricketers can cast their votes via ballot papers as well as online.
A temporary pavilion has been set up outside the BCB Academy to accommodate the event.
‘There is a lot of excitement surrounding the election. We opened a group where everyone is participating, including players abroad who want to cast their votes online,’ Nasir told reporters on Tuesday.Â
An ad-hoc committee was formed after the dissolving of the previous one—led by former captain and board director Naimur Rahman and Debabrata Paul for more than a decade—after the ousting of the Awami League government and subsequent changes in the country in August last year.
