Bangladesh suffered a crushing 77-run defeat to Sri Lanka after a dramatic batting collapse in the first ODI of the series at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday.Â
Chasing 245, Bangladesh were in a strong position of 100-1 in the 17th over. But complete mayhem followed after Najmul Hossain Shanto was run out for 24 runs.Â
Bangladesh were all out for just 167 runs in 35.5 overs. Tanzid Hasan made 62 off 61, while Jaker Ali delayed the inevitable with his 51-run innings.Â
Between the third and the eighth wicket, Bangladesh managed to add just five runs, which was a new world record.Â
Liton Das and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, in their new roles in the middle order, couldn’t score a run, while Towhid Hridoy managed one.Â
Apart from Parvez Hossain, all Bangladeshi batters fell to spinners. Wanindu Hasranga took 4-10, while Kamindu Mendis—who hadn’t bowled in his previous six ODIs—took three wickets.Â
Earlier, the bowlers – led by Taskin Ahmed – did a fine job to restrict Sri Lanka to 244 despite their captain Charith Asalanka’s innings of 106 runs off 123 balls.Â
Taskin took 4-47 while Tanzim Hasan grabbed 3-45. Debutant left-arm spinner Tanvir Ahmed and part-timer Shanto took one wicket each.Â
The second ODI will be played at the same venue on July 5. Â
