Mehidy Hasan Miraz is looking to become the world’s best Test all-rounder after finishing second in the newly revealed ICC rankings.
The Bangladesh all-rounder has achieved his career-best rating point (327) in the latest update by the ICC. He has now only Ravindra Jadeja ahead of him, who sits at the top with 400 rating points.
‘Of course it is a great feeling, but it would be better had I become the top,’ Mehidy told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday after being felicitated by the Bangladesh Cricket Supporters Association.
The 27-year-old has also achieved the double of scoring 2,000 runs and taking 200 wickets in Test cricket. He is only the second player from Bangladesh after Shakib Al Hasan to achieve that milestone.
But Mehidy doesn’t want to be content with only that.
‘My career has just started,’ he said. ‘Of course the target will be to go a long way up. At the end of the day, I’ve to travel a long way. I’ve got to be fit and got to play well. I am trying to take mini steps,’ he said.
‘It’s always a great feeling to achieve something for Bangladesh, whatever the format is. But there is no shortcut; you have to go far. I am trying that,’ he added.
Mehidy also expressed his feelings on the appointment of Shaun Tait as the new pace bowling coach of Bangladesh.
‘I worked with Shaun Tait while I was the captain of the Chattogram team in the BPL. I’ve had a great understanding with him. He is great as a human being. I think it’s good to have a coach like him,’ said Mehidy.
Mehidy was not picked in the T20 squad for the forthcoming series against the UAE and Pakistan.
