Shorna Akter’s heroics led the Bangladesh emerging women’s team to avoid the clean sweep as they secured a consolation win over their South African counterparts by 14 runs in the third and final one-day game of the series at the Bir Shrestha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram on Sunday.

After losing the first two matches of the three-match series, the home team posted 253-8 in 50 overs—their highest of the series—thanks to Isham Tanjim’s 53 and Shorna’s unbeaten 41 off 30 balls.

After losing two wickets for just nine runs, Ishma dragged Bangladesh to a comfortable position with her 87-run partnership with Sumaiya Akter (38).

Rubya Haider (34) and Afia Asima also contributed before Shorna hit a cameo with seven boundaries.

The visitor got off to a good start thanks to their openers Nicole De Klerk (42 off 49) and Simone Laurens (68 off 53). But losing wickets at regular intervals in the middle order hurt them.

Faye Tunnicliffe, who made 55 off 57, was their last hope but was undone by Shorna. The leg-spinner took three wickets for 41 runs as the South African team were bundled out for 239 runs in 49.4 overs. Sabekun Nahar also took two wickets for the hosts.

The teams will now move to Cox’s Bazar for a three-match T20 series, starting on May 14.Â
