Bangladesh emerging women’s cricket team began their three-match one-day series against their South African counterparts with a five-wicket defeat at the Bir Shrestha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram on Tuesday.

After being put into bat first, the hosts were bundled out for 179 runs in 47.5 overs.

Sumaiya Akter, who came in at four, top-scored with 52 off 73 balls after contributions from opener Ishma Tanjim (29) and captain Sarmin Sultana (34).

But Sumaiya’s wicket in the 38th over triggered a collapse in the Bangladesh innings as they lost their last six wickets for just 31 runs.

Delmari Tucker took three for 32 runs for the visitors, while Luyanda Nzuza and Ghandi Jafta each took two wickets.

National team pacer Fariha Trishna struck twice in her first two overs before Shanjida Akhter took one as the South African team was struggling at 24-3 in the 13th over in their run chase.

But Faye Tunnicliffe (89) and Eliz Mari Marx (50) formed an unbroken partnership of 96 runs, which got the visitors home with 25 balls remaining.

The second match will be held on Thursday at the same venue.
