Former Bangladesh national team captain Tamim Iqbal was moved from KPJ Specialised Hospital in Gazipur, where he had been admitted after suffering a cardiac arrest and subsequently had to undergo a surgery on Monday, to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday as the family took the decision by consulting with the doctors.
According to doctors, Tamim was doing well, but they wanted to keep him under supervision because there was still a little risk to his health.
The specialists also said that the star batter needed at least three months before taking part in any cricket activities on the field.
Chief physician of the Bangladesh Cricket Board Dr Debashish Chowdhury said that Tamim was walking and at one point was transferred to a cabin from the CCU as he was recovering well.
‘I personally went to check on him. He has been transferred to a cabin and does not require standard medical support like saline or oxygen,’ said Debashish.
‘He is walking to the toilet on his own. These are all positive signs.’
Abu Jafar, the Directorate General of Health Services of the government of Bangladesh, and Abdul Wadud, the director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, came to visit Tamim at the KPJ Hospital.
Wadud confirmed that an echocardiogram conducted on Tuesday morning showed positive signs. ‘His heart function appears normal, but we must remain cautious. Abnormal rhythms could still occur,’ he cautioned.
‘There’s something between the doctors and the patient, which should not be revealed,’ said Jafar.
‘But 48-72 hours [from the attack] is risky. And to be able to return to normal activities, he has to be given three months. Apart from that, he will do normal work and walk in his home. But he has to take complete rest.
‘Tamim will be under observation for the next three months. After considering his physical condition, if there’s any development or otherwise, a medical board will certainly approve him to play,’ Jafar concluded.
However, Debashish explained that the road ahead would not be straightforward for Tamim if he wanted to continue playing.
The 36-year-old recently retired from international cricket but wished to continue in the domestic circuit.
‘He will need complete rest for a long period. After that, he will have to return to exercise, as physical activity is part of his treatment. However, exercising and playing are two different things,’ said Debashish.
‘The intensity of exercise must be increased gradually. If someone does low-intensity exercise, there is a possibility of weight gain, so diet control is also crucial. Full rest is necessary.’
Tamim, meanwhile, urged everyone to help each other as he gave his latest update on social media.
‘Some incidents remind us of the reality; let us know that life is so short. I request you help each other in dire straits. My heartiest gratitude and love for every one of you. Please keep me and my family in your prayers. I, Tamim Iqbal, am nothing without your love,’ said Tamim on his verified Facebook page.
The family members were with Tamim on Tuesday as well. Meanwhile, the parents of Shakib Al Hasan visited Tamim on Tuesday at the hospital.
Earlier, on a Facebook post, Shakib urged everyone to pray for his ‘dear friend and brother’ Tamim.
