At least 10 students of Dhaka University were injured after jumping from the floors of several residential halls in panic during an earthquake on Friday morning.
The incident occurred shortly after 10:30am, when tremors from a 5.7-magnitude quake were felt across Dhaka. One of the injured is reported to be in critical condition. Among those hurt is the Mohsin Hall union鈥檚 vice-president.
The injured students have been identified as Mohsin Hall union VP Sadiq Hossain; Abdullah Al Tanbir of the economics department; and Tanjir Hossain and Zulfikar Ali of the journalism department.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim, a Dhaka University student and Chhatra Dal鈥檚 Assistant General Secretary candidate in the DUCSU election, said he broke his leg while rushing down the stairs during the quake. He shared the update in a Facebook post at 12:20pm.
Cracks and falling plaster were also reported in several halls following the tremor.
DUCSU health and environment secretary Abdullah Al Minhaj said injuries were reported from multiple halls across campus鈥攐ne each at Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, Kabi Jasim Uddin Hall and Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall; three at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall; two at Masterda Surja Sen Hall; and one at Kuwait Maitree Hall. He added that many more students were believed to have sustained minor injuries across the university.
