The Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee, chaired virtually by acting chairman Tarique Rahman, has expressed its gratitude to chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus for reaffirming the national election scheduled for the first half of February and for announcing that a referendum will be held on the same day.

Following the meeting, the BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters on Thursday night that the committee had also urged the government and the Election Commission to organise the referendum to gain public approval for the National Charter, which was signed unanimously on October 17.


The committee further called for the prompt holding of national parliamentary elections.

The BNP standing committee convened in an emergency meeting at the party chairperson鈥檚 Gulshan office.

The meeting was called to discuss the chief adviser鈥檚 recent address to the nation.

Among those present were standing committee members Khandkar Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Selima Rahman, Nazrul Islam Khan, and Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
