National Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Day 2025 was celebrated with the theme ‘integrated rehabilitation requires collective effort’ at the Bangladesh Medical University in Dhaka on Thursday.
At the initiative of Bangladesh Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the programme began with a rally on the Battala premises of the university, said a press release.
The rally was inaugurated by BMU’s pro-vice-chancellor, research and development, Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Hawlader.
Later, a discussion meeting was held at the Shaheed Dr Milon Hall of the university.
Chaired by the BSPMR president Professor Dr Md Taslim Uddin, Bangladesh Cricket Board president Aminul Islam Bulbul, Professor Mujibur Rahman Hawlader, BSPMR vice-president Professor Dr MA Shakur, Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh treasurer Dr Mehedi Hasan, BMU proctor Dr Sheikh Farhad and assistant proctor Dr Md Ershad Ahsan Sohel attended the discussion as special guests.
Emphasising on integrated initiatives, Professor Mujibur Rahman Hawlader said, ‘The number of people suffering from stroke, accidents, arthritis and spinal injuries is increasing rapidly. In these cases, medicine or surgery alone is not enough, physical medicine and rehabilitation are essential to return the patient to a normal life.’
Expressing gratitude to the medical community, Aminul Islam Bulbul said, ‘The hard work and research you (doctors) do for the survival of people is commendable. The physical and mental aspects are very important in playing cricket. If a player wants to perform well, we need your help for physical maintenance.’
Professor Dr Md Taslim Uddin said, ‘We believe that it is possible to build a strong and humane rehabilitation system in Bangladesh through joint efforts. We always think disability does not mean disabled. It is actually different ability.’
‘If we can add some ability to their limitations, their disability is reduced to a large extent. With the help of physical medicine and rehabilitation, ability gives people new strength, new skills and a new light of hope,’ he added.
