The police on Thursday recovered the dismembered body of a man from two plastic drums near the capital’s Supreme Court compound, where tight security measures were in place throughout the day.

The deceased is identified as Md Ashraful Haque, 43, of the Shyampur area under Badarganj upazila in Rangpur district.

Tight security measures were taken in the Supreme Court area by the members of the law enforcement and security agencies against the backdrop of Awami League’s ‘Dhaka lockdown’ programme as the International Crimes Tribunal was scheduled for announcing the verdict date of a crimes against humanity case against ousted prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina for atrocities committed across the country during the July uprising.

The police said that they, after receiving information from locals, rushed to the spot and recovered the dismembered body, wrapped in black plastic bags from two blue drums at about 6:00pm.

Locals said that the drums were left on the footpath in the afternoon. They informed the police in the evening after getting a bad smell from the drums.

A crime scene team of the Criminal Investigation Department visited the spot and identified the body using his fingerprint.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s deputy commissioner for Ramna division, Masud Alam, said that the police were working to check the CCTV footage in the area to identify the miscreants and the people who left the drums there.

He said that they sent the body to Dhaka Medical College mortuary for conducting an autopsy.

The police said that the man might have been killed elsewhere one or two days ago.
