The Gopalpur upazila election office in Tangail was vandalised on Monday reportedly by local people over the election office staff’s alleged misbehaviour and refusal to provide services.
Three people, including upazila election officer Nazrul Islam, were beaten during the incident happened at about 11:00am, reportedly in presence of Bangladesh Nationalist Party men.
The upazila election office’s data entry operator Amjad Hossain sustained serious injuries at the time and was admitted to Gopalpur Upazila Health Complex.
The staff of the office said that the attackers called them Awami League people and hurled abuse at them with foul language before swooping on them.
When contacted, upazila BNP general secretary Kazi Liaquat alleged that election officer Nazrul Islam was involved in irregularities and corruption.
‘When we went to the election office with the aggrieved locals who came with various allegations, he (the upazila election officer) misbehaved,’ said Liaquat, adding, ‘as we went to him, he got up from the chair and left the room, without giving us a chance to talk.’
‘He also ordered (his staff) to capture video,’ Liaquat said.
He said that he along with his party men went to the upazila election commissioner’s office to discuss with them the complaints from the local people.
‘We went to talk but he became furious when he heard it,’ Liaquat said.
Regarding the incident Tangail district election officer Tajul Islam said that a case would be filed for vandalising a government office and assaulting a government official.
Tangail district police superintendent Mizanur Rahman said, ‘We inspected and found the government office vandalised. If there was any complaint against the election officer, it could have been lodged in writing. If the election officer files a complaint, action will be taken.’
