Chief election commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin on Monday said that the transition of Bangladesh from the current critical period depended on the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections.

He made the remark after inspecting a training programme held for a contingent of the Ansar and Village Defence Party in the capital’s Bhatara area.

Around five lakh Ansar members would be deployed for the upcoming JS polls expected to be held in February 2026, according to the Ansar and VDP.

Addressing the event, Nasir Uddin said, ‘Bangladesh now stands at a very critical moment. Which direction we will move towards as a nation and how we will walk the path of democracy depend on the next election.’

The training event was part of a nationwide mock drill on polling centre security ahead of the next polls and the fourth phase of the 2025–26 basic training for Ansar members.

Highlighting the new initiatives, CEC Nasir Uddin announced that polling officials and election staff would be able to take vote with a new ‘Postal Voting App’, set to be launched on November 16.

The commission was also taking special measures to ensure voting rights for expatriate Bangladeshis and citizens under legal custody such as detainees in jails, Nasir Udiin said.

Ansar and VDP director general major general Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud said that the Ansar and VDP would play a vital role in strengthening security during the national elections.

‘Ansar members will assist not only on the polling day, but also during campaign activities. In addition, they will help raise public awareness about the voting procedures,’ he said.
