The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Sunday indicted detained Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president Hasanul Haq Inu and absconding Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif on charges of committing crimes against humanity during the July 2024 crackdown in Kushtia.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, also indicted three Kushtia Awami League leaders — district unit president Md Sadar Uddin Khan, general secretary Md Ali Asgar Ali, and town unit general secretary Ataur Rahman Ata — in separate case.

The tribunal fixed November 25 to begin recording testimonies of prosecution witnesses in the case against Hanif and the three local leaders, and November 30 for witness depositions in the case against Inu.

Inu and Hanif, both former lawmakers from Kushtia, are close aides of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

They are accused of bearing superior command responsibility for killings and attacks carried out in Kushtia during the 2024 mass uprising.

On September 25, the prosecution filed eight counts of crimes against humanity charges against Inu and Hanif, including the killing of six protesters in Kushtia on August 5, 2024.

The victims were identified as labourer Ashraful Islam, trader Babul Farazi, office employee Yunus, and students Abdullah Al Mustakin and Md Usama, and Suruz Ali Babu.
