Temporary and daily wage workers of Rajshahi City Corporation staged demonstrations on Wednesday demanding a raise in their wages.

They observed a work abstention programme and held a sit-in in front of the city corporation building’s main entrance after keeping it under key and lock.

Speakers at the sit-in said that temporary and daily wage workers were paid Tk 484 per day and received no wages on Fridays or holidays.

Consequently, most of the workers of these two categories earned merely Tk 10,000–12,000 per month, they alleged.

‘With this money, it has become nearly impossible for us to feed our family members, let alone bearing their educational expenses,’ said one of the agitating workers with a heavy heart.

He alleged that the officials had often threatened them to sack and also not to engage in any RCC work whenever they attempted to place their demands.

From the sit-in, the workers placed several points of demand including implementing a minimum monthly wage of Tk 22,500 for all workers and employees, ensuring the government-declared daily wage of Tk 750, providing annual festival bonuses, paying salaries by the 3rd of every month, issuing written resolutions to complaints, granting retirement benefits upon departure, and ending recruitment irregularities by making temporary workers permanent.

However, despite repeated attempts, RCC chief executive officer Rezaul Karim could not be reached over the phone for his comments.
