The High Court on Thursday gave the Police Bureau of Investigation six more months — for the last time — to complete the probe into the murder of journalist couple Sagor Sarwar and Meherun Runi.
A bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Fatema Anwar granted the extension following a petition from additional superintendent of Police Azizul Haque, the investigation officer, who sought more time to complete the long-pending investigation.
The court accepted the request based on the officer’s verbal assurance that the investigation would possibly be completed within the given period.
Additional attorney general Arshadur Rauf supported the plea on behalf of the government-formed four members taskforce, which was constituted by the High Court after removing the Rapid Action Battalion from the probe.
Opposing the time extension, the victims’ family lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir argued that such repeated delays risk undermining justice, noting that the current interim government, which took the case seriously, may no longer be in office after the February 2026 national elections.
