The 71st anniversary of the death of poet Jibanananda Das was observed in Barishal on Wednesday.

Marking the day, Pragati Lekhak Sangha Barishal unit and Kabita Parishad Barishal unit placed floral wreath on the portrait of the poet at the Memorial Hall in the city’s Jibanananda Das Sarak.


The organisations also held a discussion on the poet and recitation of his poems.

Among others Dipankar Chakroborty , Tapankar Chakroborty, Bahauddin Golap, Susahanta Ghosh, Apurbo Goutam, Alamin Baklai, Hasina Begum and Tunu Rani Karmakar participated in the programme.

Born in Barishal on February 17, 1899, Jibanananda Das belonged to the group of poets named Kallol, who tried to shake off Rabindranath Tagore’s poetic influence.

The poet unique talent of the poet was realised immediately after his death, with the discovery of many of his manuscripts.

His poems inspired a pride in Bengali nationhood, especially in the ‘60s and during the War of Independence.

His volumes of poems include ‘Jhara Palak’, ‘Dhusar Pandulipi’, ‘Banalata Sen’, ‘Mahaprithibi’, ‘Satti Tarar Timir’, ‘Rupasi Bangla’ and ‘Bela Abela Kalbela’.

Principally a poet, Jibanananda Das also wrote essays, short stories and novels. Many of his novels were published posthumously, including ‘Malyaban’ and ‘Sutirtha’.

His complete works has been published in 12 volumes under the title Jibanananda Samagra from Kolkata, India.

The poet passed away on October 22, 1954 in Kolkata.
